With the recent news of the bullying situation happening on the Miami Dolphins, it reminds us of how much of a problem this has become in our society and how no one can be immune to this, even grown men.
Several years ago, a study was published by the Mount Sinai Medical Center showing how prevalent it is in children with food allergies. It has been estimated that more than 3 million children in the US have food allergies. Apparently one third or more of children over the age of 5, who are allergic to certain foods, have experienced harassment, and bullying.
This a very disturbing study and it could lead to children not wanting to carry their injectable epinepherine because of the fear of being teased at school. Many of these children were teased repeatedly, sometimes even by the school staff.
It is important we speak to our children, their friends and school staff in hopes of making a more conducive environment in a child with food allergies.
