Patients who have aspirin allergy, asthma and nasal polyps are commonly referred to having Samter’s Triad.
Studies have shown that aspirin desensitization in patients with these symptoms have improved control of asthma, improved nasal flow and improved lung function. Improvement of smell and nasal blockage were also seen. This study was recently published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. This lends support to aggressively treating these patients with the triad of these symptoms. Far too many patients are given multiple medications to treat all of their symptoms, but it is important to elicit the history of aspirin allergy in patients who may have nasal polyps and/or asthma. These patients should be given the option of aspirin desensitization.
