Greer Laboratories has been the first company to receive FDA approval for sublingual immunotherapy.
They recieved approval for Oralair for patients who are grass allergic, it contains 5 grass species (Sweet Vernal, Orchard, Perennial Rye, Timothy and Kentucky Blue Grass). Patients who have grass pollen induced allergic rhinitis confirmed by positive skin test or invitro testing for IgE antibodies, may be candidates. Following their approval, Merck also received approval for Grastek and Ragwitek, their own sublingual grass tablet and ragweed tablet respectively. In the US, approximately 7.5 million people are allergic to grass and 4.5 million to short ragweed.
