Bethenny Frankel from the hit reality show, Real Housewives of New York, suffered what was reported an anaphylactic episode. In a previous season of her show, she had a reaction after eating fish, she has stated that she has a rare fish allergy. This most recent episode occurred after eating soup which contained fish in it. The reaction necessitated using an epinephrine injector (Epipen), which was injected by her boyfriend.
Fish is one of the top 8 allergens in the United States, along with wheat, milk, soy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts and shellfish. There is a current push to add sesame as a major food allergen, making 9 foods that will require food manufacturers to label their packages with.
We do not know Bethenny Frankel’s exact allergy, but based on her posting, it seems that she can eat certain fish and not all. It is encouraged that all people who suffer from an anaphylactic episode to see an allergy doctor to help identify which foods they are allergic and to have a treatment plan in place.
She carries an injectable epinephrine around which is the first line choice of an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Epipen has been in the news a lot lately because of its exorbitant costs. Ms. Frankel has stated that her new mission will be to try and make Epipen’s more accessible and affordable to the population. In the U.S. costs can run up to over $600.
A lot of celebrities in the past have posted regarding their allergies, but based on her information, it seems that Bethenny Frankel did indeed have a true allergic reaction and it was treated properly with epinephrine.
